SUMMARY:Geographical Indication (GI) & Trademark Enforcement and Protection
DESCRIPTION:Purpose of the Webinar: “Swissness” of things is something that Switzerland has always been proud of and has promoted. Within Swissness lies several origin – guaranteed products which are termed as “geographical indications” (GIs) by the IP community. Swiss chocolates\, Swiss watches and Swiss knives are the quintessential products having Swissness. Additionally\, there are several Swiss cheeses such as Appenzeller and Emmentaler which are also origin guaranteed products.  India has a specific law to protect GIs.  Yet\, it is noted that no Swiss product names are registered as GIs in India\, even though there are several European GIs including from France that have already entered the Indian GI Register. A discussion on the opportunities for these products in India and an analysis of the gap in the current levels of protection sought by these names would be very interesting.
